Dental Extractions: Why You May Need a Tooth Removed
At Luzid Smiles, we understand that tooth extractions can be a daunting prospect for many patients. Our primary goal is to help you preserve your natural teeth as long as possible. However, sometimes teeth are non-restorable or pose a risk to the rest of your smile, requiring urgent removal. Thankfully, our experienced dental professionals are here to guide you through the process and ensure a comfortable and stress-free experience.
Reasons for Tooth Extractions
Tooth extractions are necessary for various situations. Common reasons we see in our Whittier dental office include:
Severe decay: When a tooth is extensively decayed or infected, it may not be possible to save it with a filling, crown, or root canal treatment. In such cases, extraction may be necessary to prevent the spread of infection to other teeth in your mouth.
Crowding: In some cases, tooth extraction may be recommended to alleviate crowding in the mouth. This can help to create more space for remaining teeth, making orthodontic treatment more effective.
Impacted wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, often don't have enough room to erupt fully or properly and can cause discomfort, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth. In such cases, extraction is often the best course of action.
Trauma: Teeth may need to be extracted if they have been severely damaged due to trauma, such as a sports injury or car accident.
Gum disease: Advanced periodontal disease can cause the supporting tissues and bones around teeth to deteriorate, making them loose and unstable. In such cases, extraction may be necessary to halt the progression of the disease and protect your adjacent teeth.
The Extraction Procedure
At Luzid Smiles, we use the latest techniques and equipment to ensure a smooth and painless extraction process. Before the procedure, we will numb the area around the tooth to be extracted using a local anesthetic, ensuring that you feel no pain or discomfort during the procedure.
Once the area is numb, we will use specialized instruments to loosen the tooth from its socket. After the tooth has been extracted, we will place a gauze pad over the socket and ask you to bite down gently to help stop the bleeding. Most people can return to their normal activities the next day.
Aftercare Instructions
Following the extraction, it is important to take good care of the extraction site to ensure proper healing and prevent complications. Here are some aftercare instructions to follow:
• Bite down on the gauze pad provided for at least 30-45 minutes to help stop bleeding.
• Apply an ice pack to that side of your face for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off during the first day to reduce swelling and discomfort.
• Avoid rinsing your mouth vigorously or using a straw for the first 24 hours after the extraction.
• Eat soft foods and avoid hot liquids for the first day or two after your extraction.
• Brush and floss your teeth carefully, avoiding the extraction site, to maintain good oral hygiene.
• Take any pain medications or antibiotics prescribed by our dentist as directed.
• Contact us if you experience severe pain, bleeding, or swelling or if you develop a fever or other signs of infection.
Dental Implants
If you're missing teeth, dental implants are an excellent option for restoring your smile’s appearance and function. Our team of implant providers can guide you through the entire process, from implant placement to crown placement, ensuring you get the best possible outcome.
